1891 Cole Porter, singer, composer, one of America's greatest songwriters. Wrote countless classic songs, 'Night And Day', 'I Get A Kick Out Of You', 'Ev'ry Time We Say Goodbye'. Died 15th Oct 1964.

1915 guitarist Les Paul, inventor of the Gibson Les Paul guitar who also had a 1953 UK No.7 single with ‘Vaya Con Dios’ and the US No.7 single ‘Hummingbird’ with May Ford featuring his multi-layered recording techniques. He also pioneered “close miking” and echo delay recording. He broke his right arm in a car accident and had it set at an angle so he could still play guitar.

1929 R&B singer Johnny Ace, Billboards 'most played artist of 1955'. He died playing Russian roulette backstage at a gig on December 25th 1954.

1934 Blues guitarist Wild Jimmy Spruill is born.

1934 R&B star Jackie Wilson is born in Detroit. He had six No. 1 hits on Billboard's R&B singles. He is posthumously inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of fame in 1987.

1946 Stuart Edwards, Edison Lighthouse, (1970 UK No.1 single 'Love Grows Where My Rosemary Goes').

1947 Mitch Mitchell, drums, Jimi Hendrix Experience, (1967 UK No.3 single 'Purple Haze', 1970 UK No.1 single Voodoo Chile'). Mitchell had been in the ITV's 'Ready Steady Go!' house band.

1992 Jazz and blues singer Clarence ``Big'' Miller dies in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, of a heart attack. He was 70. He had performed with such jazz legends as Count Basie, Duke Ellington and Miles Davis.

1996 Carpenter and traditional singer Walter Pardon dies at the age of 82.
