1924 Chet Atkins, guitarist, 1960 UK No.46 single 'Teensville'. Recorded over 100 albums during his career, major influence on George Harrison and Mark Knopfler. Atkins died on June 30th 2001, aged 77.

1936 Billy Guy, The Coasters, (1958 US No.1 single 'Yakety Yak', 1959 UK No.6 single 'Charlie Brown').

1936 Mickie Most, record producer. Member of The Most Brothers during late 50's. Produced hits for The Animals, Hermans Hermits, Lulu and Jeff Beck. Ran his own label, RAK during the 1970's, hits with Hot Chocolate, Suzi Quatro and Mud. Most died on May 30th 2003, aged 67.

1937 Jerry Keller, US singer, (1959 UK No.1 and US No. 14 single 'Here Comes Summer').

1942 Brian Wilson, singer, songwriter, The Beach Boys, (1966 UK & US No.1 single 'Good Vibrations', plus over 25 other UK Top 40 singles. 1966 classic album 'Pet Sounds'). Released and toured the 'lost' Beach Boys 'Smile' album in 2004.

1946 Anne Murray, singer, songwriter, (1978 US No.1 & UK No.22 single 'You Needed Me').

1949 Lionel Richie, vocals, keyboards, The Commodores, (1978 UK & US No.1 single 'Three Times A Lady') solo, (1984 UK & US No.1 single 'Hello' plus over 10 other UK Top 40 hit singles).

1937 W2XBS (later WCBS-TV) televised the first TV operetta. The work was the "Pirates of Penzance" by Gilbert and Sullivan.

1948 The TV variety show, "Toast Of The Town" premiers. It later changes its name to "The Ed Sullivan Show."

1963 Gerry And The Pacemakers were at No.1 on the UK singles chart with 'I Like It', the group's second No.1.

1964 Touring Australia The Beatles played a third night at Sydney Stadium in Sydney.

1966 The New York Times reports George Harrison of the Beatles and Brian Jones of the Rolling Stones have taken up the sitar. Jones would use the instrument on "Paint It Black".

1969 Jimi Hendrix earned the largest paycheck (to that time) for a single show when he earned $125,000 for a single set at the Newport Jazz Festival.

1969 David Bowie signs with Philips Records and goes into Trident Studios in London to re-record "Space Oddity."

1969 The first of a three day Festival in Newport, California, featuring: Ike And Tina Turner, Marvin Gaye, Creedence Clearwater Revival, The Byrds, The Rascals, Steppenwolf, the Jimi Hendrix Experience, Janis Joplin, Johnny Winter, Eric Burdon and Love. A three day ticket cost $15 (?8.80).

1972 The Tallahatchie Bridge, made famous in Bobbie Gentry's 1967 hit, "Ode To Billie Joe", collapses.

1973 American Bandstand celebrated its 20th anniversary with a 90-minute television special. Little Richard, Paul Revere & the Raiders, Cheech and Chong and Three Dog Night made appearances.

1974 Appearing at Knebworth Park, Stevenage, England, Van Morrison, The Allman Brothers, The Mahavishnu Orchestra, Tim Buckley, The Sensational Alex Harvey Band and The Doobie Brothers. A special PA system was used claiming to be the best ever for an outside event, weighing 12 tons and needing five technicians.

1977 Steve Winwood's first solo album was released.

1980 "It's Still Rock & Roll" became Billy Joel's first #1 hit.

1985 Smiths guitarist Johnny Marr married Angela Brown in San Francisco.

1986 Acts appearing at the fourth annual 'Prince's Trust Rock Gala' held in London included Phil Collins, Dire Straits, Tina Turner and Elton John.

1987 Soul singer Teddy Pendergrass married Karen Still.

1987 The Firm were at No.1 on the UK singles chart with 'Star Trekkin.'

1989 During a UK tour The Stone Roses appeared at the Riverside in Newcastle upon Tyne.

1989 The "Batman:Motion Picture Soundtrack" was released by Prince.

1992 Mariah Carey scored her sixth US No.1 single with 'I'll Be There', a No.2 hit in the UK. The song was also a US No.1 for The Jackson Five in 1970.

1995 George Jones and Tammy Wynette released their reunion album "One."

1995 Jeff Buckley played the first night of a UK tour at The Queens Hall, Edinburgh.

1996 The Furthur Festival kicks off in Atlanta. The show marks the first time the members of The Grateful Dead perform together since the death of Jerry Garcia.

2000 The Ronettes were awarded $2.6 million (?1.5 million) in “back earnings” from Phil Spector. New York judge Paula Omansky ruled that the legendary producer had cheated them out of royalties.

2004 Velvet Revolver were at No.1 on the US album chart with ‘Contraband.'

2004 Britney Spears went to No.1 on the UK singles chart with 'Everytime', the singers fifth UK No.1.

2004, organisers at a Paul McCartney gig hired three jets to spray dry ice into the clouds so it wouldn’t rain during the concert. The gig in Petersburg, Russia, was McCartney’s 3,000 concert appearance.
