1929 June Carter Cash, country singer, wife of Johnny Cash. Died 15th May 2003 aged 73. Had hits with Johnny Cash, 'Ring Of Fire', 'Jackson', 'If I Were A Carpenter'.

1940 Adam Faith, singer and actor, (1959 UK No.1 single 'What Do You Want', plus over 20 other UK Top 40 singles), acting roles include the TV series 'Love Hurts.' Faith died on March 8th 2003.

1940 Stu Sutcliffe, bass, The Beatles, 1960-61. Stayed in Hamburg until his death, died of a brain haemorrhage in an ambulance on the way to hospital on April 10th 1962, aged 22.

1956 Randall Darius Jackson, American musician and record producer, now best known for being a judge on the US television show American Idol.

1957 Lee John, Imagination, (1982 UK No.2 single 'Just An Illusion').

1962 Richard Coles, Communards, (1986 UK No.1 single 'Don't Leave Me This Way').

1962 Steve Shelley, drums, Sonic Youth, (1993 UK No.26 single 'Sugar Kane').

1965 Motown Records releases "Tracks Of My Tears" by Smokey Robinson & The Miracles. The same song will be a hit for Linda Ronstadt in 1976.

1966 The Rolling Stones depart London for their 3rd U.S. tour only two weeks after Mick Jagger was hospitalized after collapsing from exhaustion at the end of huge tours of Australia and Europe.

1967 Arthur Conley receives a gold record for his first hit, "Sweet Soul Music".

1967 John Entwistle of The Who marries Alison Wise.

1970 Twist king Chubby Checker and 3 others are arrested in Niagra Falls after marijuana and unidentified drug capsules are found in Checker's car.

1975 Jefferson Starship release their album, Red Octopus.

1975 The potential danger of performing rock at big arenas is realized by Alice Cooper who falls off the set of his "Welcome To My Nightmare" tour in Vancouver. He breaks six ribs.

1976 Paul McCartney and Wings complete their Wings Over America tour at the Forum in Los Angeles. At a Forum show two days earlier, Ringo Starr appeared on stage during the band's final number and presented Paul with flowers.

1979 Supertramp's album, "Breakfast in America" ends the week on top of the U.S. album chart.

1984 Van Halen release their single, "Panama."

1984 Duran Duran started a two week run at No.1 on the US singles chart with 'The Reflex', the groups first US No.1, also a UK No.1.

1989 George Michael received the Silver Clef Award for outstanding achievements to British Music.

1989 New Kids on the Block were nearly thrown out of a hotel in Anaheim after they were caught throwing balloons filled with Kool-Aid at guests.

1990 Actor Gary Busey, who played Buddy Holly in "The Buddy Holly Story," pays $242,000 for one of Holly's guitars at an auction in New York.

1995 CBS News anchor Dan Rather joins R.E.M. onstage at Madison Square Garden during a soundcheck to perform "What's The Frequency, Kenneth?" which referred to a bizarre incident years before when Rather was beaten up by thugs demanding the answer to the question. The performance was shown on David Letterman's "The Late Show."
