1903 Country singer Roy Acuff was born. He was the first living artist to be elected into the Country Music Hall of Fame.

1941 Les Braid, The Swinging Blue Jeans, (1964 UK No.2 single 'Hippy Hippy Shake').

1956 Jaki Graham, singer, (1985 UK No.5 single 'Could It Be I'm Falling In Love').

1958 Tim Whelan, Furniture, Guitar, (1986 UK No.21 single 'Brilliant Mind').

1960 Michel Dorge drums, Crash Test Dummies, (1994 UK No.2 & US No.4 single 'MMM MMM MMM MMM').

1965 Zak Starkey, drummer, (son of Ringo). Formed his own band The Face and has worked with The Who, Oasis, Johnny Marr and the Spencer Davis Group.

Deaths
2004 Ramones guitarist Johnny Ramone (John Cummings) died in Los Angeles of prostate cancer. Founding member of The Ramones, major influence on many punk and 90's bands.

1930 Hoagy Carmichael recorded "Georgia on My Mind." The song has been the official state song of Georgia since 1922.

1934 NBC radio debuted "The Gibson Family." The program was the first musical comedy to be broadcast.

1956 Elvis Presley started a five-week run at No.1 on the US charts with 'Don't Be Cruel'.

1962 The Beatles were called "a nothing group" after an interview with Peter Jones of the "London Daily Mirror."

1962 The Four Seasons started a five week run at No.1 on the US singles chart with 'Sherry', it made No.8 in the UK. They became the first American group to have three No.1's in succession.

1964 The Beatles were ordered off the stage at Cleveland's Public auditorium so the screaming crowd could calm down.

1997 A 34 year old man was awarded more than Ł20,000 by a French court after he lost his hearing when he stood too close to loudspeakers at a U2 concert in 1993.

2003 Abba tribute acts overtook Elvis impersonators in the battle of British covers singers according to a survey. 2003 Madonna's children's book "The English Roses" went on sale.

2006 The Casbah Coffee Club in Liverpool where The Beatles played their first gig was given a Grade II listed building status after a recommendation from English Heritage. John Lennon, Paul McCartney and George Harrison played in the converted coal cellar of the house in West Derby, in August 1959 as The Quarrymen.

2007 Rihanna started a 40-date North American and European tour at GM Place, Vancouver, British Columbia Canada.
