1948 Eddy Grant is born Edmond Grant in Plaisance, Guyana. He had a 1983 No. 2 with "Electric Avenue."

1956 Teena Marie is born in Santa Monica, Calif.

1957 Mark E. Smith of the Fall is born in Salford, England.

1958 The youngest brother of the Bee Gees, Andy Gibb is born in Manchester, England.

1968 Damon Albarn of Blur born.

1963 Country singer Patsy Cline dies with Cowboy Copas and Hawkshaw Hawkins in a plane crash outside Camden, Tenn. She was 30.

1968 Syd Nathan, boss of R&B label King Records, dies in Miami Beach, Fla., at age 63. King released records by legends like Little Willie John and James Brown.

1973 Jimi Hendrix's manager Mike Jeffrey is killed in a place crash in France.

1982 Blues Brother John Belushi dies after overdosing on drugs at Los Angeles' Chateau Marmont Hotel. He was 33.

1995 Bonzo Dog Band guy Vivian Stanshall dies in a fire at his home in Muswell Hill, England. The singer was 52.

1955 Elvis Presley makes his first TV appearance on The Louisiana Hayride.

1955 Performing right organization BMI announces it will tighten control over possibly objectionable lyrics.

1960 Elvis Presley officially leaves the Army at Fort Dix, N.J., having attained the rank of buck sergeant.

1963 The Beatles begin recording "From Me to You." The group members are also photographed by Angus McBean while changing clothes.

1964 After a day filming scenes for A Hard Day's Night, the Beatles and Brian Epstein dine that evening at Oxford's Brasenose College.

1965 The Rolling Stones kick off an English tour accompanied by the Hollies, Goldie & the Gingerbreads, the Checkmates, and the Konrads.

1965 The Mannish Boys featuring David Bowie release their second single, "I Pity the Fool."

1983 Michael Jacksons album 'Thriller' went to No.1 for the first time on the UK album chart, it went on to become the biggest selling album of all time with sales over 40 million.

1984 Pink Floyd guitarist Dave Gilmour releases his second solo album, About Face.

1992 R.E.M. cleaned up in The Rolling Stone Music Awards winning, album of the year, for 'Out Of Time', artist of the year, best single for 'Losing My Religion', best video for 'Losing My Religion', best band, best guitarist & best songwriter.

2000 Madonna went to No.1 on the UK singles chart with her version of the Don McLean Hit 'American Pie'. It was her 50th UK hit and the singers ninth UK No.1.
