1924 Lee Marvin, actor and singer who had a UK 1970 UK No.1 single with 'Wand'rin Star', taken from the film 'Paint Your Wagon'. Marvin died on August 29th 1987.

1940 Bobby Rogers, The Miracles, (1970 UK & US No.1 single with Smokey Robinson 'Tears of a Clown').

1940 Smokey Robinson, singer, songwriter, producer, The Miracles, (1970 UK & US No.1 single 'The Tears Of A Clown',) solo (1981 UK No.1 & US No.2 single 'Being With You'), vice President of Motown Records in 1972.

1943 Lou Christie, US singer, (1966 US No.1 single 'Lightnin Strikes', 1969 UK No.2 single 'I'm Gonna Make You Mine').

1946 Pierre Van Den Linden, drums, Focus, (1973 UK No.4 single 'Sylvia', 1973 US No. 9 single 'Hocus Pocus').

Deaths
1980 Bon Scott, the lead singer of heavy metal band AC/DC, died in London at the age of 33. He died as a result of choking on his own vomit after drinking heavily.

2003 In West Warwick, RI, 99 people were killed when fire destroyed the nightclub The Station. The fire started with sparks from a pyrotechnic display being used by Great White. Ty Longley, guitarist for Great White, was one of the victims in the fire.

1957 Tab Hunter was at No.1 on the UK singles chart with 'Young Love', the US singers only UK No.1 hit.

1958 The Miracles released their first single "Got A Job."

1963 Appearing at The Cavern Club, Liverpool, England, The Beatles, Freddie Starr & The Midnighters, The Pathfinders and Curtis & The All Stars. The Beatles had 'Please Please Me' at No.1 on the NME singles chart.

1964 Simon & Garfunkel completed the original acoustic version of "Sounds of Silence."

1965 Working at Abbey Road studios in London, The Beatles recorded a new John Lennon song 'You're Going To Lose That Girl' in two takes. The track was released on the Help! album.

1966 Lou Christie went to No.1 on the US singles chart with 'Lighnin' Strikes', a No.11 hit in the UK. Nancy Sinatra held the UK No.1 single position with 'These Boots Are Made For Walkin'

1968 Gerry Marsden (Gerry & the Pacemakers) began a 3-1/2 year run in the London stage production of "Charlie's Girl."

1970 Tommy Boyce and Bobby Hart guest starred onn ABC-TV's "Bewitched".

1971 Paul McCartney released "Another Day" in the U.K.

1972 Paul McCartney released "Give Ireland Back to the Irish." The song was immediately banned by the BBC.

1972 Harry Nilsson started a four week run at No.1 on the US singles chart with his version of the Badfinger song 'Without You.'

1972 Led Zeppelin appeared at the Memorial Drive, Adelaide in Australia.

1974 Dick Clark premiered the "American Music Awards."

1974 KISS made thier TV debut on "Don Kirshner's Rock Concert."

1976 Rich Stevens (Tower of Power) was arrested and charged in the murders of three men the night before in San Jose, CA. The reason was believed to be drugs. Stevens and another were found guilty on two counts of murder the following November.

1976 Appearing at Dingwalls, Camden Town, London, Kilburn And The High Roads, featuring Ian Dury.

1976 Former lead singer with Tower Of Power, Rich Stevens was arrested in connection with the drug related murders of three men in San Jose, California. Stevens was found guilty of the charges in November 1976.

1977 '20 Golden Greats' by The Shadows started a six-week run at No.1 on the UK album chart.

1977 Leo Sayer had his only UK No.1 single with 'When I Need You.'

1977 Manfred Mann's Earth Band scored a No.1 single in the US with their version of the Bruce Springsteen song 'Blinded By The Light.'

1981 Accountant Glenn Kannry pleaded guilty to taking cash from Diana Ross's bank account.

1981 George Harrison was ordered to pay ABKCO Music the sum of $587,000 for "subconscious plagiarism" between his song, "My Sweet Lord" and the Chiffons "He's So Fine."

1982 Ozzy Osbourne was arrested in San Antonio, Texas for urinating on the Alamo. Osbourne was wearing a dress at the time of his arrest.

1983 Spandau Ballet's Tony Hadley married his girlfriend Leonie.

1983 Kajagoogoo had their only UK No.1 single with 'Too Shy'. The group had four other top 40 hits.

1983 Patti Austin and James Ingram started a two week run at No.1 on the US singles chart with 'Baby Come To Me', a No.11 hit in the UK.

1985 Mick Jagger released "She's The Boss". It was his first solo album.

1989 Billed as "The 1989 World Tour Starts Here", Simply Red played the Edinburgh Playhouse.

1991 Public Enemy boycotted the 1991 Grammy Awards because the rap award was not going to be presented during the live TV ceremony. Sinead O'Connor also boycotted the event.

1994 John Michael Montgomery went to No.1 on the US album chart with 'Kickin' It Up'.

1994 Mariah Carey had her first UK No.1 with her version of the Peter Ham Tom Evans song 'Without You'. Nilsson also took the song to No.1 in 1972. Both Ham and Evans committed suicide after an ongoing battle to receive royalties from the song.

1995 Motley Crue drummer Tommy Lee married Baywatch's Pamela Anderson on a Cancun beach, the bride wore a white bikini.

1995 Roxette became the first Western group to perform in Beijing since George Michael in 1984 when they played a concert celebrating the Chinese New Year.

1995 Jon Bon Jovi and his wife Dorothea give birth to son Jesse James Louis.

1996 London police arrested singer Jarvis Cocker (Pulp) for allegedly attacking three children that were performing with Michael Jackson at the Brit Awards. Cocker denied touching any children.

1996 Bjork was shown on UK breakfast TV attacking a news reporter as she arrived at Thailand Airport. The footage showed the singer pulling the female reporter to the floor and banging her head on the ground. Bjork later apologised for the attack.

1996 Winners at this year's Brit Awards included Paul Weller who won British Male Solo Artist, British Female Solo Artist went to Annie Lennox, Oasis won British Group, Best Album for '(What's The Story) Morning Glory?' and Best British Video for 'Wonderwall. British Breakthrough Act went to Supergrass, International Group was Bon Jovi, International Breakthrough Act went to Alanis Morissette and David Bowie was awarded Outstanding Contribution to music. Pulp singer Jarvis Cocker was arrested after a stage invasion during Michael Jackson's appearance, (who won Artist of a Generation). Cocker was accused of attacking children who were performing with Jackson; all charges against Cocker were dropped on March 11th of this year.

1997 Miles Davis received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

1997 A New York judge dismissed a $7 million lawsuit filed against Motley Crue for hearing loss of a fan that was suffered at one of their concerts.

1998 The Stray Cats reunited for a single show at L.A.'s House Of Blues. The show was a benefit for the Carl Perkins Foundation.

1998 Lorrie Morgan issued a denial concerning an article that the tabloid "Star" magazine had published about "a wild ride in the back sear of a limousine with U.S. President Bill Clinton."

1999 Spice Girl Melanie B gave birth to a baby daughter and named her Phoenix Chi.

2000 Savage Garden went back to No.1 on the US singles chart for the second time with 'I Knew I Loved You.'

2004 Johnny Cash's family blocked an attempt by advertisers to use his hit song 'Ring of Fire' to promote haemorrhoid-relief products. The idea is said to have been backed by Merle Kilgore, who co-wrote the song with Cash's wife, June Carter Cash. Cash's daughter Rosanne said the family "would never allow the song to be demeaned like that."

2008 Two releases by Oasis were voted the best British albums ever recorded in a poll of 11,000 people. Their 1994 album Definitely Maybe came top, while their 1995 follow-up (What's the Story) Morning Glory was second in the vote for Q magazine and HMV. Radiohead's OK Computer finished third, followed by Revolver by The Beatles and the Stone Roses' self-titled debut. The full list of 50 British albums included five by The Beatles.
