1928 Fats Domino, (Antoine Domino), singer, pianist, bandleader, songwriter. 1957 US No.6 & UK No.6 single 'Blueberry Hill' and 35 other US Top 40 singles.

1932 Johnny Cash, US country singer/songwriter who had a 1969 US No.2 & UK No.4 single with 'A Boy Named Sue' plus 11 other US Top 40 singles). He had a US TV Johnny Cash show in the late 60s-early 70s. Cash died of respiratory failure on September 12th 2003, aged 71.

1943 Paul Cotton, guitar, Poco, (1979 US No.17 single 'Crazy Love').

1945 Bob The Bear Hite, vocalist and harmonica player with Canned Heat, (1968 US No.11 single with 'Going Up The Country' and a 1970 UK No.2 single with 'Let's Work Together'). He died on April 5th 1981.

1947 Sandie Shaw, singer, (1964 UK No.1 single 'There's Always Something There To Remind Me', plus 15 other UK Top 40 singles). First UK act to win the Eurovision Song Contest with 1967, 'Puppet On A String.'

1950 Jonathan Cain, keyboards, Journey, (1982 US No.2 single 'Open Arms').

1953 Michael Bolton, singer, (1990 US No.1 & UK No.3 single 'How Am I Supposed To Live Without You').

1958 Steve Grant, singer, Tight Fit, (1982 UK No.1 single 'The Lion Sleeps Tonight').

1960 Jaz Coleman, Killing Joke, (1985 UK No.16 single 'Love Like Blood').

1961 John Jon, Bronski Beat, (1984 UK No.3 single 'Smalltown Boy').

1968 Tim Commerford, bass, Rage Against The Machine, (1996 US No.1 album 'Evil Empire'). Audioslave (2005 US No.1 album 'Out of Exile').

1969 Timothy Brown, bass player, The Boo Radleys, (1995 UK No.9 single 'Wake Up Boo').

1971 Erykah Badu, US female singer, (1997 UK No.12 single 'On & On', 2001 UK No. 23 single with Macy Gray, 'Sweet Baby').

1979 Corinne Bailey Rae, UK singer, songwriter, (2006 UK No. 2 single 'Put Your Records On', 2006 self-titled UK No.1 album). She is only the fourth female British act in history to have her first album debut at No.1 on the UK chart.

1977 Sherman Garnes from Frankie Lymon And The Teenagers, died during open-heart surgery. (1956 UK No.1 and US No.6 single 'Why Do Fools Fall In Love').

1990 Cornell Gunter of the Coasters was murdered in Las Vegas at the age of 53.

1991 US songwriter Doc Pomus died, Wrote many early 60's hits including, 'Sweets For My Sweet', 'Teenager In Love', 'Save The Last Dance For Me.'

1997 US songwriter Ben Raleigh died after setting fire to his bath robe- while cooking. Co-wrote 'Scooby Doo Where Are You.'

1954 A U.S. Congresswoman introduced a bill to prohibit the distribution of "obscene, lewd, lascivious or filthy" recordings.

1955 LaVern Baker appealed to Congress in a letter to Michigan Representative Charles Digges Jr. The letter requested the revision of the Copyright Act of 1909.

1955 Billboard reported that for the first time since their introduction in 1949, 45rpm singles were outselling the old standard 78's.

1958 Perry Como was at No.1 on the UK singles chart with 'Magic Moments' a song written by Burt Bacharach and Hal David. It stayed at No.1 for eight weeks.

1964 The Beatles worked on the final mixes for 'Can't Buy Me Love' and 'You Can't Do That' tracks. The single, which was released the following month, topped the charts all over the world

1965 Guitarist Jimmy Page released a solo single called 'She Just Satisfies', it didn't chart.

1966 The Rolling Stones' "19th Nervous Breakdown" was released.

1966 Nancy Sinatra went to No.1 on the US singles chart with 'These Boots Are Made For Walking', also a UK No.1.

1966 The Beatles 'Rubber Soul' was at No.1 on the US album chart, the group's seventh US album chart topper.

1969 Peter Sarstedt was at No.1 on the UK singles chart with 'Where Do You Go To My Lovely'

1970 The Beatles album "Beatles Again" was released in the U.S. It contained the song "Hey Jude."

1973 During a 9-date tour of Australia and New Zealand The Rolling Stones played the first of two nights at the Royal Randwick Racecourse in Sydney.

1975 Harry Chapin's revue "The Night That Made America Famous" opened on Broadway.

1977 The Eagles' "Hotel California" was released.

1978 Vladimir Horowitz marked the 50th anniversary of his U.S. debut with a performance at the White House.

1979 During a court case between The Sex Pistols and their manager Malcolm McLaren it was revealed that only Ł30,000 ($51,000) was left of the Ł800,000 ($1,360,000) the band had earned.

1979 Magazine played the first night of 12-date UK tour at Sussex University.

1980 After seeing U2 play at Dublin's National Boxing Stadium in front of 2,400 people; Rob Partridge and Bill Stewart from Island Records in the UK offered the band a recording contract.

1983 Michael Jackson's 'Thriller' went to No.1 on the US album chart. It went on to become the most successful album of all time with sales over 100 million.

1983 U2 played the first of 29 UK dates on their War tour at the Caird Hall in Dundee, Scotland. Support was The Nightcaps.

1984 Frankie Goes To Hollywood were enjoying their fourth week at the top of the UK singles chart with 'Relax.'

1985 Chuck Berry received a Lifetime Achievement Grammy.

1987 Capitol Records released the first 4 Beatles albums on CD.

1990 Sinead O'Connor was at No.1 on the UK singles chart with 'Nothing Compares 2 U.' Her version of the Prince penned song was also a No.1 hit in 18 other countries.

1994 Appearing at The Free Trade Hall, Manchester, England, M People.

1994 Toni Braxton went to No.1 on the US album chart with 'Toni Braxton.'

1991 "Rockline on MTV" premiered.

1995 Jimmy Page and Robert Plant began a world tour to support their reunion album "No Quarter."

1997 Peter Andre kicked off a 26-date UK tour at Preston Guild Hall.

1998 Tommy Lee of Motley Crue was formally charged with abusing his wife Pamela Anderson Lee, and one of their sons, Dylan.

2000 Lonestar started a two week run at No.1 on the US singles chart with 'Amazed.'

2001 Winners at the Brit Awards included Coldplay, Best British group and Best British album for 'Parachutes', Robbie Williams, Best British Male artist and Best single for 'Rock DJ', Sonique, Best British Female artist, Best Dance act went to Fat Boy Slim, A1 won Best British Newcomer, Westlife won Best Pop act, Eminem won Best International Male solo artist and U2 won Outstanding contribution to music.

2001 The Darkness made their live debut when they played at Camden HQ. It was a tribute gig to raise money for the family of Ed's band mate from his previous band Q-Sling who had committed suicide earlier that month.

2002 Alanis Morissette's third album "Under Rug Swept" was released.

2005 The wife of Status Quo guitarist Rick Parfitt was rushed to hospital after slashing her wrists in a suicide attempt after a Sunday newspaper ran a story claiming that Rick had been cheating on his wife.

2006 Hawaii born singer, songwriter, Jack Johnson went to No.1 on the UK album chart with 'In Between Dreams.'

2008 Two original members of UK boy band Busted went to court, claiming an estimated Ł10m in unpaid royalties. Ki McPhail and Owen Doyle claimed they wrote songs with James Bourne and Matt Willis when the group formed in 2001, but said they were forced to sign away their rights after "threats" when they were sacked from the band later that year. The songs include 'Year 3000' and 'What I Go To School For', which went on to be hits for the group.
