1934 Sarah Vaughan, jazz singer, (1954 US No.6 single 'Make Yourself Comfortable' plus 8 other US Top 30 hits). Vaughan died 3rd April 1990.

1947 Andrew Brown, The Herd, (1968 UK No.5 single 'I Don't Want Our Loving To Die')

1950 Tony Banks, keyboards, Genesis, (1986 US No.1 single 'Invisible Touch', 1992 UK No.7 single 'I Can't Dance' plus over 15 other UK Top 40 hit singles & 6 UK No.1 albums).

1953 Walter Stocker, Air Supply, (1980 UK No.11 single 'All Out Of Love', 1981 US No.1 single 'The One That You Love').

1957 Billy MacKenzie, singer, The Associates, (1982 UK No.9 single 'Party Fears Two'). MacKenzie committed suicide on 23rd January 1997.

1959 Andrew Farriss, keyboards, INXS, 1988 UK No.2 & US No.1 single 'Need You Tonight', 1987 album 'Kick' has sold over 10m copies in the US alone and features four Top 10 singles; 'Need You Tonight,' 'Devil Inside', 'New Sensation,' and 'Never Tear Us Apart.'

1970 Mariah Carey, singer. Carey is named after 'They Call The Wind Mariah' from the musical 'Paint Your Wagon'. Scored the 1994 UK No.1 single 'Without You' plus over 20 other UK Top 40 hits and 12 US No.1 singles.

1975 Fergie, US R&B singer, songwriter, former member of Kids Incorporated, Wild Orchid, co-host of the TV show Great Pretenders, and vocalist of The Black Eyed Peas. 2003 US & UK No.1 single 'Where Is The Love', 2006 US No.1 solo single ‘London Bridge.’ 2007 world-wide No.1 single 'Big Girls Don't Cry.'


Deaths
2000 Singer, songwriter, poet and actor, Ian Dury died after a long battle with cancer aged 57. Dury had been disabled by polio as a child, formed Kilburn and the High Roads during the 70's. His first album 'New Boot's And Panties' became a punk classic spending 90 weeks on the UK chart, featured the 1979 UK No.1 single 'Hit Me With Your Rhythm Stick.'

1945 Ella Fitzgerald and the Delta Rhythm Boys recorded "It’s Only a Paper Moon."

1950 Jazz pianist, Erroll Garner became one of the first jazz instrumentalists to give a solo concert. In 1954, he wrote the song "Misty."

1951 Frank Sinatra recorded "I’m a Fool to Want You."

1964 The British invasion continued to make it's way around the world with The Beatles having the top six positions on the Australian pop chart.

1965 The Supremes scored their fourth US No.1 single with 'Stop! In The Name Of Love.'

1966 During an UK tour, Roy Orbison fell off a motorbike while scrambling at Hawkstone Park, Birmingham fracturing his foot. He played the remaining dates sat on a stool and walking on crutches.

1967 Fats Domino played his first ever UK date at London's Saville Theatre, supported by The Bee Gees and Gerry And The Pacemakers.

1967 The Young Rascals recorded "Groovin'."

1967 John Lennon and Paul McCartney were awarded the prestigious Ivor Novello award for 'Michelle', the most performed song in the UK in 1966.

1968 The Bee Gees kicked off a 24-date UK tour at London's Royal Albert Hall. Also on the tour, The Foundations and Dave Dee, Dozy, Beaky, Mick and Tich.

1968 The Beatles were at No.1 on the UK singles chart with 'Lady Madonna', the groups 14th UK No.1 and final No.1 on the Parlophone label.

1971 New York radio station WNBC banned the song 'One Toke Over the Line' by Brewer & Shipley because of its alleged drug references. Other stations around the country followed.

1972 Elvis Presley recorded what "Burning Love." It would turn out to be his last major hit.

1973 Jerry Garcia from The Grateful Dead was arrested when Police found cocaine and, LSD in his car after being busted for speeding in New Jersey.

1973 Rolling Stone magazine reported that after becoming a disciple of Sri Chinmoy, Carlos Santana had changed his name to 'Devadip', which means 'the lamp of the light of the Supreme'.

1974 Cockney Rebel appearing at Sheffield Poly, England.

1976 Paul McCartney and Wings were forced to postpone forthcoming US tour for three weeks after guitarist Jimmy McCulloch fell in his hotel bathroom and broke a finger.

1978 The Beatles parody 'All You Need Is Cash' featuring The Rutles was shown in the UK on BBC-TV.

1979 Bruce Springsteen's first video, "Rosalita," premiered on BBC-TV.

1979 Eric Clapton married Patti Harrison (the ex wife of George) at Temple Bethel, Tucson, Arizona. Patti applied for a divorce in 1988.

1981 AC/DC released "Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap" in the U.S. It had been released in Australia in 1976.

1982 former Small Faces and Faces bass player Ronnie Lane was admitted to hospital for treatment for multiple sclerosis, (Lane died from the disease in 1997).

1982 The Goombay Dance Band were at No.1 on the UK singles chart with 'Seven Tears', making them the second German act to score a UK No.1, (Kraftwerk being the first).

1984 Metallica made their UK live debut at the Marquee, London.

1984 Cyndi Lauper released "Time After Time."

1986 Sammy Hagar played his first show as lead singer of Van Halen.

1987 U2 filmed their video "Where the Streets Have No Name" on a rooftop in L.A.

1991 Donnie Wahlberg of The New Kids on the Block was arrested in Louisville, KY, for first-degree arson. He allegedly poured vodka on a hotel carpet and set it on fire.

1993 Hot Chocolate went to No.1 on the UK album chart with 'Their Greatest Hits' album.

1995 Tupac Shakur's "Me Against the World" made him the first rap artist to debut at No. 1 on the charts while in jail for sexual assault.

1997 The Spice Girls had the UK No.1 single with 'Mama / Who Do You Think You Are.' Will Smith held the US No.1 position with 'Gettin' Jiggy With It'.

1998 Construction began on Alice Cooper's new Coopers'town Restaurant in Phoenix, AZ.

2001 Christina Aguilera signed an U.S. sponsorship deal with Cola-Cola, only a month after Britney Spears signed a deal to promote Pespi.

2002 Lyle Lovette was trampled by a bull while trying to help his uncle who had just been thrown by the animal. Lovette's lower right leg was broken in several places.

2004 Local council officials planned to have a street named after The Darkness in their hometown Lowestoft, Norfolk in honour of Justin Hawkins and his band for their recent world-wide success. Hawkins Close or Hawkins Way had been put forward by council officials.

2005 Tony Christie started a two week run at No.1 on the UK album chart with the ‘Definitive Collection’. This was almost 30 years after his last album chart appearance due to his Comic Relief No.1 single with comedian Peter Kay.

2007 The wife of Velvet Revolver singer Scott Weiland was arrested on suspicion of burning over $10,000 (?5,000) of his belongings outside their home after police in southern California found a bin of smouldering clothes. Earlier that day, the couple left two rooms vandalised after an argument at a luxury hotel.

2007 Eminem and his ex-wife Kim reached a court agreement to stop insulting each other in public. The pair, who divorced for the second time last year, pledged to stop trading insults for the sake of their 11-year-old daughter Hailie. The deal came after the rap star took legal action to stop Kim Mathers making "derogatory, disparaging, inflammatory and otherwise negative comments".
