1939 Rudolph Isley, The Isley Brothers, (1968 UK No.3 single This Old Heart Of Mine', 1973 US No 6 & UK No.14 single 'That Lady').

1942 Alan Blakley, Brian Poole and the Tremeloes, (1967 UK No.1 & US No.11 single 'Silence Is Golden'). He died of cancer 1st June 1996.

1942 Phil Margo, The Tokens, (1961 US No.1 & UK No.11 single 'The Lion Sleeps Tonight').

1945 John Barbata, The Turtles, (US No.1 single 'Happy Together', Jefferson Starship, (1987 UK & US No.1 single 'Nothing's Gonna Stop Us').

1946 Arthur Conley, US soul singer, (1967 US No.2 & UK No.7 single 'Sweet Soul Music). He died of cancer on 17th November 2003.

1946 Ronnie Lane, bass player and vocalist with Small Faces. The Small Faces, had a 1967 UK No.3 & US No.16 single with ‘Itchycoo Park’ and a 1968 UK No.1 album with 'Ogden’s Nut Gone Flake'. As The Faces they had a 1972 UK No.6 & US No.17 single with ‘Stay With Me’. Ronnie then formed Slim Chance, who had a 1974 UK No.5 single with ‘How Come’. He died on June 4th 1997, aged 51, after a 20 year battle with multiple sclerosis.

1947 Robin Scott, M, (1979 US No.1 & UK No.2 single 'Pop Muzik').

1948 Jimmy Cliff, Jamaican singer, songwriter, (1969 UK No.6 & US No.25 single 'Wonderful World Beautiful People', 1970 UK No.8 version of Cat Stevens 'Wild World').

1948 Simon Cowe, guitar, Lindisfarne, (1972 UK No.3 single 'Lady Eleanor', 1978 US No.33 single 'Run For Home).

1952 Billy Currie, keyboards, Ultravox, (1981 UK No.2 single 'Vienna', plus 15 other UK Top 40 singles).

1954 Jeff Porcaro, drums, Toto, (1983 US No.1 & UK No.3 single 'Africa'). Porcaro died on 5th August 1992.

Deaths
1984 Marvin Gaye, at the age of 44, was killed by his father . Gaye's father received probation after pleading guilty to voluntary manslaughter.

1998 Rozz Williams hanged himself.

2004 Paul Atkinson guitarist with The Zombies died aged 58. They scored the 1964 US No.2 & UK No.12 single 'She's Not There'.

1955 George Martin became the head of A&R for EMI's Parlophone label.

1956 Elvis Presley filmed his first Hollywood screen test, acting the role of Jimmy Curry in a scene from 'The Rainmaker'.

1957 Frankie Lymon and the Teenagers appearing at London Palladium.

1960 Elvis Presley taped Frank Sinatra's Timex TV special in Miami.

1961 Troy Shondell recorded "This Time."

1961 The Beatles began a three- month residency at The Top Ten Club, Hamburg. The band played for seven hours a night on weekdays and eight hours at weekends with a fifteen-minute break every hour.

1963 Fats Domino signed with ABC-Paramount after his Imperial contract ended.

1964 John Lennon was reunited with his father after 17 years.

1977 Elvis Presley was admitted to a Memphis hospital due to fatigue and intestinal flu. He stayed in the hospital for six days.

1978 The Philadelphia Fury soccer team made its debut. The team was owned by Paul Simon, Peter Frampton, James Taylor and others.

1978 Elvis Costello and The Attractions appearing live at The Bracknell Sports Centre, Berkshire, England.

1979 The Who released the album "The Kids Are Alright."

1983 Kirk Hammett joined Metallica.

1985 David Lee Roth left Van Halen to pursue a solo career.

1985 The "We Are the World" album was released.

1985 Tom Bailey singer with The Thompson Twins collapsed from exhaustion while staying at The Holiday Inn, Chelsea. He was flown to Paris to see his private doctor.

1989 Madonna scored her third UK No.1 album with 'Like A Prayer.' Also a US No.1 the album spent 70 weeks on the UK chart.

1989 The Bangles went to No.1 on the US singles chart with 'Eternal Flame', also a No.1 in the UK.

1990 Willie Nelson's tour bus crashed into a car in Riverdale, Canada, killing the car driver.

1990 Duff (Guns & Roses) and Mandy Brix (Lame Flames) were divorced.

1991 Rod Stewart was surprised onstage by Elton John, who was wearing a dress.

1992 Billy Idol pled no contest to punching a woman in the face. He was fined and told to make public service announcements against alcohol and drug use.

1995 The Outhere Brothers were at No.1 on the UK singles chart with 'Don't Stop (Wiggle Wiggle).

2000 Santana started a nine week run at No.1 on the US singles chart with, 'Maria Maria.'

2001 Crazytown went back to No.1 on the US singles chart for two weeks with 'Butterfly'.

2001 TV's 'Popstars' winners Hear'say started a two-week run at No.1 on the UK album chart with their debut album 'Popstars.'

2002 Paul McCartney kicked off the first leg of his 19 date ‘Driving USA’ North American tour at The Oakland Arena, Oakland.

2007 American indie rock band Modest Mouse were at No.1 on the US album chart with ‘We Were Dead Before the Ship Even Sank.' The album featured former Smiths guitarist Johnny Marr who joined the band in May 2006.
