1899 Composer Edward Kennedy "Duke" Ellington was born. Worked with Louis Armstrong, Ella Fitzgerald, Dizzy Gillespie, Billie Holiday.

1928 Carl Gardner, The Coasters, (1958 US No.1 single 'Yakety Yak', 1959 US No.2 and UK No.6 single 'Charlie Brown').

1931 Lonnie Donegan, singer who launched the skiffle craze. He had a 1960 UK No.1 single with ‘My Old Man’s A Dustman’, plus over 30 other UK Top 40 singles. He died on November 3rd 2002.

1942 Klaus Voorman, bass, Manfred Mann, Plastic Ono Band. Voorman designed the cover for The Beatles album 'Revolver.'

1945 Soft Machine bassist Hugh Hopper born.

1947 Tommy James, The Shondells, (1966 US No.1 single 'Hanky Panky', 1968 UK No.1 single 'Mony Mony').

1949 Francis Rossi, guitar, vocals, Status Quo, (1977 UK No.3 single 'Rockin' All Over The World', plus 50 other UK Top75 singles since 1968).

1953 Bill Drummond, producer, A&R man, writer, musician. Joined Big In Japan in 1977 (with Holly Johnson, later of Frankie Goes To Hollywood and Ian Broudie later of Lightning Seeds). Co-founder of Merseysides Zoo Records. Formed KLF in the late 1980’s, who had a 1991 UK No.1 single ‘3 AM Eternal’.

1958 Simon Edwards, Fairground Attraction, (1988 UK No.1 single 'Perfect').

1960 Phil King, bass, Lush, (1996 UK No.21 single 'Single Girl').

1968 Carine Wilson, Wilson Phillips, daughter of Beach Boy Brian Wilson, (1990 US No.1 & UK No.6 single 'Hold On').

1973 Mike Hogan, bass, The Cranberries, (1994 UK No.14 single 'Linger'). The bands 1993 album 'Everybody Else Is Doing It So Why Can’t We' spent 86 weeks on the UK chart.

1979 Joanne Velda O'Meara, vocals, S Club 7, (1999 UK No.1 single 'Bring It All Back'). 2000 UK No.1 album '7' spent over a year on the UK chart.

1980 Kian Egan, vocals, Westlife, (Irish boy band, scored 12 UK No.1 singles, first UK No.1 1999 'Swear It Again' plus 4 UK No.1 albums).

1981 Tom Smith, bass guitarist, Editors, (2007 UK No.1 album album 'An End Has A Start').


Deaths
1993 Guitarist, producer, Mick Ronson died of cancer. Ronson recorded and toured with David Bowie. Released the 1974 album 'Slaughter On Tenth Avenue', part of Hunter, Rondon. Def Leppard's Joe Elliot said of his death, 'If there's a God up there why does he do this' It can only be because he's trying to put together the ultimate band'.

1960 Warner Brothers launched its label in Britain with the release of The Everly Brothers 'Cathy's Clown'.

1960 Dick Clark told the U.S. House of Representatives that he had never taken payola for the records he featured on his show "American Bandstand."

1963 Manager Andrew Loog Oldham and agent Eric Easton singed a management deal with The Rolling Stones after buying the rights to the bands first recordings for 90 pounds. They also persuade keyboard player Ian Stewart to drop out of the line up and become the bands road manager (and still play piano at the back of the stage).

1965 Jimmy Nicol, the drummer who stood in for Ringo Starr during a Beatles Australian tour in 1964, appeared in a London Court faced with bankruptcy with debts of 4,000 pounds.

1967 Jimi Hendrix, The Walker Brothers, Engelbert Humperdink and Cat Stevens played two shows at Bournemouth Winter Gardens, England.

1967 The 14 hour Technicolour Dream benefit party for The International Times was held at Alexandra Palace in London. Seeing the event mentioned on TV, John Lennon called his driver and went to the show. Coincidentally, Yoko Ono was one of the performers. Other acts to appear included The Flies, Pink Floyd, Arthur Brown, The Move and Susie Creamcheese.

1967 Aretha Franklin's "Respect" was released.

1969 Working on tracks for the forthcoming Beatles Abbey Road album, Ringo Starr added his vocal to 'Octopus's Garden.'

1973 John Denver began a weekly live UK BBC 2 TV special, 'The John Denver Show'.

1973 The Bay City Rollers appeared at The Odeon Theatre, Edinburgh in Scotland.

1975 The Bee Gees released the album "Main Course." The album featured "Jive Talkin'" and "Nights on Broadway."

1976 Folowing a gig in Memphis, Bruce Springsteen took a cab to Elvis Presley's Graceland home and proceeded to climb over the wall. A guard took him to be another crank fan and apprehended him.

1978 Former Annie Lennox band The Tourists play The Hope & Anchor, London, Entrance 75p.

1978 P.J. Proby was sacked from his role in the London stage musical Elvis after repeatedly changing his lines from the script. Proby had been playing the oldest of three Presleys in the play.

1978 Single Of The Week in this weeks NME is The Tom Robinson Band, 'Up Against The Wall'.

1978 The theme from the film 'Saturday Night Fever' gave The Bee Gees their 3rd No.1 UK single with 'Night Fever

1979 Van Halen's "Dance The Night Away" single was released.

1980 Black Sabbath began their first tour with vocalist Ronnie James Dio, who had replaced Ozzy Osbourne.

1981 Elton John paid 14,000 pounds for 232 'Goon Show' scripts broadcast during the 50's at an auction held at Christies, London.

1988 Eric Clapton filed for a divorce from Patti "Layla" Boyd.

1989 Jon Bon Jovi marries on the steps of the Graceland Chapel, Las Vegas.

1992 Paula Abdul and Emilio Estevez were married. They divorced two years later.

1993 An animated Barry White was a guest on "The Simpsons."

1995 Tupac Shakur married Keisha Morris inside the Clinton Correctional Facility. He was serving a 4 1/2 year jail term for *** abuse.

1996 Phil Spector cancelled a recording project with Celine Dion due to a lack of a contract.

1997 Boy George was accused of being a 'professional liar' by musician singer Kirk Brandon during a London court hearing. Brandon was in court suing the singer over claims in George's autobiography that pair had slept together.

1998 Steven Tyler injured his knee at a concert in Anchorage, Alaska delaying Aerosmith's Nine lives tour and necessitating camera angle adjustments for the filming of the video for 'I Don't Want to Miss a Thing'. 14 shows had to be cancelled.

1999 Tommy Lee announced that he had quit Motley Crue to devote time to his new band, Methods of Mayhem, and his family.

2001 Rod Stewart asked for a change in wedding vows bringing them up to-date and to be treated like a dog licence. Stewart said 'a change is needed because they've been in existence for 600 years when people used to live until they were only 35'.

2001 S Club 7 scored their third UK No.1 single with 'Don't Stop.' Ash went to No.1 on the UK album chart with 'Free For Angels.'

2007 Arctic Monkeys started a three week run at No.1 on the UK album chart with their second album 'Favourite Worst Nightmare.'

2007 Avril Lavigne was at No.1 on the US album chart with her third album 'The Best Damn Thing', also a No.1 on the UK chart.
