1942 Paul Jones, singer, harmonica player, actor, radio presenter, Manfred Mann, (1964 UK & US No.1 single 'Do Wah Diddy Diddy), The Blues Band.

1944 Nicky Hopkins, session piano player who worked with The Rolling Stones, Jeff Beck, The Beatles, John Lennon, The Who and Small Faces. Hopkins died on September 6th 1994.

1947 Rupert Holmes, writer, producer, singer, (1980 US No.1 & UK No. 23 single 'Escape, (The Pina Colada Song).

1947 Lonnie Turner, bass, Steve Miller Band, (1974 US No.1 & 1990 UK No.1 single 'The Joker').

1990 50's teen idol Johnnie Ray died of liver failure. He scored over 20 Top 40 singles between 1952 & 1960 including 1956 UK No.1 & US No.2 single, 'Just Walking In The Rain'.

1940 Frances Langford recorded "When You Wish Upon a Star".

1956 In Cleveland, OH, police invoked a 1931 ordinance barring people under the age of 18 from dancing in public unless accompanied by an adult.

1957 Buddy Holly recorded a new version of 'That'll Be The Day', the title being taken from a phrase used by John Wayne in the film 'The Searchers.'

1963 The Rolling Stones started a Sunday night residency at The Station Hotel, Richmond, Surrey. The Stones were paid L24 for the gig ($41) and played on the first night to 66 people.

1964 The Beatles appeared for the 3rd time on "The Ed Sullivan Show." They appeared via tape.

1965 The Beach Boys recorded "Help Me Rhonda".

1965 The first full day of filming took place for The Beatles movie 'Help!' with the group riding bicycles on location near London Airport, England.

1969 The Jimi Hendrix Experience played their last ever-British performance when they appeared at the Royal Albert Hall.

1973 Roberta Flack had her second US No.1 when 'Killing Me Softly With His Song', started a five-week run at the top. The song was written about US singer songwriter Don McLean.

1973 The Byrds made their final live appearance when they played at The Capitol Theatre in Passaic, New Jersey.

1976 The Eagles 'Greatest Hits' became the first album to be certified platinum by the R.I.A.A. New certification's represented sales of 1 million copies for albums and two million for singles.

1978 "The Second Barry Manilow Special" aired on ABC-TV with guest star Ray Charles.

1979 A new UK TV show started on BBC2 called 'Seven To One', the title referring to the format of seven teenagers questioning a star guest, the first weeks guest was the singer from The Boomtown Rats, Bob Geldof.

1980 NBC premiered the TV movie "Harper Valley P.T.A."

1987 Fats Domino received a Lifetime Achievement Award at the 29th annual Grammy Awards.

1988 Alice Cooper announced he would run for Governor of Arizona as a member of the "Wild Party".

1990 Bob Dylan joined Roger McGuinn, Chris Hillman and David Crosby to sing "Mr. Tambourine Man" at a Los Angeles tribute to the late Roy Orbison.

1990 Manchester band The Happy Mondays had six singles on the UK indie chart.

1992 Kurt Cobain married Courtney Love in Waikiki, Hawaii. The press reported that the couple were expecting a baby on Sept 10th of this year.

1992 The U.S. Postal Service unveiled 2 versions of its proposed Elvis stamp for fans to vote on. The younger Elvis design won and was issued on January 8, 1993.

1992 Kurt Cobain and Courtney Love were married in Hawaii.

1998 Tommy Lee (Motley Crue) was arrested and charged with hitting his wife Pamela Anderson Lee.

2000 Sixties pop star Georgie Fame was banned from driving for a year and fined Ł350 after being breathalysed the morning after a concert. Police stopped the 56 year old as he returned to his home in Somerset from a concert in Narberth, Wales.

2002 Sting started a two-week run at No.1 on the UK album chart with 'Sting, The Very Best Of.'

2003 CMT featured an entire day of Shania Twain programming.

2004 Estelle Axton, who helped create the legendary US soul music label Stax, died in hospital in Memphis, aged 85. Stax was home to Otis Redding, Rufus Thomas, Isaac Hayes and Booker T and the MG's and the Stax studio, 'Soulsville USA', was second only to Motown in its production of soul hits during its 1960s heyday.

2005 Former Orange Juice singer, guitarist and producer Edwyn Collins was rushed to hospital after suffering a brain haemorrhage.

2008 The Feeling went to No.1 on the UK album chart with their second album 'Join With Us.'
