1940 Joe Negroni, Frankie Lymon and the Teenagers, (1956 UK No.1 & US No.6 single 'Why Do Fools Fall In Love'). He died on 5th September 1978.

1941 Otis Redding US soul singer, (1968 US No.1 & UK No.3 single 'Sittin' On The Dock Of The Bay', plus 10 other UK Top 40 singles). Redding was killed in a plane crash on 10th December 1967.

1942 Luther Simmons, Main Ingredient, (1974 US No.10 & UK No.27 single 'Just Don't Want To Be Lonely').

1945 Doug Ingle, Iron Butterfly, (1968 US No.14 single 'In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida').

1946 Billy Preston, US singer, keyboard player (1973 US No.1 single 'Will It Go Round In Circles', 1978 UK No.2 single with Syreeta 'With You I'm Born Again', and 1969 single 'Get Back' with The Beatles.

2004 US guitar maker Ernie Ball died after a long illness. Developed the guitar strings called 'Slinkys' specifically designed for rock and roll electric guitar.

1955 The Dual Music System Jukebox was introduced by the J.P. Seeburg Corporation. It was the first to hold a hundred singles.

1956 Elvis Presley made his first appearance on the Ed Sullivan show "Toast of the Town." He was shot from just the waist up during the performance. Elvis would make a total of three appearances on the show.

1965 US newspaper The Hollywood reporter ran the following advertisement; 'Madness folk & roll musicians, singers wanted for acting roles in new TV show. Parts for 4 insane boys. The Monkees were born.

1965 The Rolling Stones were at No.1 in the UK with ('I Can't Get No) Satisfaction', giving the band their 4th UK No.1 single.

1966 John Lennon and Yoko Ono met in an art gallery.

1967 "Soul Man," by Sam & Dave, was released.

1968 Working at Abbey Road studios The Beatles recorded 'Helter Skelter'. John Lennon played bass and honked on a saxophone, roadie Mal Evans tried his best at playing trumpet. Paul McCartney recorded his lead vocal and George Harrison ran about the studio holding a flaming.

1971 John Lennon's LP "Imagine" was released.

1971 During a North American tour Led Zeppelin appeared at Hampton Roads Coliseum in Hampton.

1972 Jim Croce started a five-week run at No.1 on the US album chart with 'You Don't Mess Around With Jim.'

1972 Slade were at No.1 on the UK singles chart with 'Mama Weer All Crazee Now', the groups third UK No.1.

1972 The Eagles' "Witchy Woman" was released.

1977 David Bowie appeared on Marc Bolan's ITV show, 'Marc', singing a duet with Bolan. After the show they recorded demo's together which were never finished after Bolan was killed in a car crash one week later.

1978 A Taste Of Honey started a three week run at No.1 on the US singles chart with 'Boogie Oogie Oogie', it made No.3 in the UK.

1978 "Beast of Burden" was released by the Rolling Stones.

1978 U2 opened for the Stranglers in Dublin at the Top Hat Ballroom.

1978 Boney M scored their first UK No.1 album when 'Night Flight To Venus' started a four-week run at the top of the charts.

1979 Yusef Islam (Cat Stevens) married Fouzia Ali at Kensington Mosque.

1980 The Allman Brothers Band kicked of a UK tour at Manchester's Apollo Theatre.

1981 Sting and Phil Collins both played their first solo sets at Amnesty's International's "The Secret Policeman's Other Ball."

1982 The gospel musical "Your Arms Too Short to Box with God" by Vinnete Carroll opened with Al Green and Patti LaBelle.

1989 Italian based Black Box started a six -week run at No.1 on the UK singles chart with 'Ride On Time'.

1989 New Kids On The Block scored their second US No.1 single with 'Hangin' Tough', a No.1 in the UK in 1990. The group also went to No.1 on the US album chart on this day with 'Hangin Tough'.

1992 Nirvana's Chris Novoselic knocked himself unconscious during the MTV music and video awards after being hit on the head with his guitar after throwing it 'up in the air'.

1995 Coolio started a three week run at No.1 on the US singles chart with 'Gangsta's Paradise', based on Stevie Wonders 'Pastime Paradise', it also made No.1 in the UK.

1995 Michael Jackson scored his 5th solo UK No.1 single when 'You Are Not Alone' started a two-week run at the top of the charts.

1995 Chynna Phillips and actor William Baldwin were married. Chynna is the daughter of Michelle and John Phillips of the Mamas and Papas.

1996 Tom Petty's wife, Jane, filed for divorce after 22 years.

1998 An episode of "Judge Judy" aired in which *** Pistol Johnny Rotten appeared as the defendant in a case involving a drummer who sued Rotten for allegedly head-butting him during a contract dispute.

1999 Nine Inch Nails performed at the 1999 MTV Video Music Awards. It was their first-ever appearance on a televised award show.

1999 Fatboy Slim scored a hat trick at the MTV Video Music Awards in New York when he won best direction, breakthrough and choreography awards.

2001 Aaliyah went to No.1 on the US album chart with her self-titled album.

2001 Bob The Builder scored his second UK No.1 single with his version of the Lou Bega No.1 hit 'Mambo No. 5.'

2001 Jamiroquai started a two-week run at No.1 on the UK album chart with 'A Funk Odyssey'.

2003 A recording of a February Kiss concert was shown at big-screen theaters in 21 U.S. cities. The show was recorded in Melbourne's Telstra Dome with a 60-piece symphony orchestra.

2005 Terry Howard a studio engineer who had been accused of stealing recordings belonging to late soul singer Ray Charles was cleared of all charges in a Los Angeles court. Howard who had worked for Charles for 20 years had been arrested in February after dozens of recordings belonging to Ray Charles Enterprises were seized from his home.

2005 Liverpool City Council confirmed it was to demolish Ringo Starr's birthplace because it had "no historical significance." The house in Dingle, was one of 460 properties to be demolished for a regeneration project. The council said Madryn Street had no significance because Ringo had spent only three months of his life there.

2005 An international conference devoted to the life, work, and influence of Bruce Springsteen was held at Monmouth University, New Jersey. The festivities included various live acts, as well as keynote addresses by rock critics and figures from the music industry. More than 150 papers were presented to the course including Springsteen and American Folklore, Springsteen and Dylan's American Dreamscapes, Springsteen's Musical Legacy, Born to Run at 30-Years-Old, Springsteen and New Jersey and the Boss and the Bible.

2005 U2 played the first of six nights at the Air Canada Center in Toronto, Canada during their Vertigo world tour.

2006 50 Cent was stopped by police for alleged unsafe driving in New York and received citations for an unsafe lane change, driving with an expired permit, driving without insurance and driving without vehicle registration. A crowd gathered, taking photos, cheering the superstar and jeering the police after he was pulled over in his silver open-topped Lamborghini.

2006 Danity Kane went to No.1 on the US album chart with their self-titled debut album. The girl group was formed on the third installment of the US TV show Making the Band series.

2007 Hard-Fi went to No.1 on the UK album chart with 'Once Upon A Time In The West' the bands second UK No.1.
