1938 Guitarist Willie Chambers of the Afro-American Chambers Brothers, is born in Flora, Miss.

1942 Mike Pender, guitarist with the Searchers is born in Liverpool, England.

1944 Jance Garfat, bassist with Dr. Hook is born in California.

1947 Jennifer Warnes, who teamed up with Joe Cocker for the 1982 No. 1 "Up Where We Belong" and then Bill Medley for the 1987 No. 1 "(I've Had) The Time of My Life," is born in Seattle.

1947 Dave Mount, drummer with Mud, is born in Carshalton, England.

1950 Tubes vocalist Re Styles is born.

1953 Singer/songwriter Robyn Hitchcock is born in London.


Deaths
1994 Kurt Cobain slips into a coma while on a European tour. He had overdosed on a combination of Rohypnol, chlorylhydrate, and champagne. He has his stomach pumped after Courtney Love finds him unconscious in their hotel room in Rome and is released from the hospital on March 8.


Events
1960 Elvis Presley arrives in America following his Army stint in Germany. He is welcomed home by Nancy Sinatra.

1965 Today on Shindig!, the Rolling Stones perform "Suzie Q".

1966 Neil Young, Stephen Stills, and Richie Furay form Buffalo Springfield after Young arrives in Los Angeles driving a hearse. Also in L.A. are the Rolling Stones, who record tracks for their album Aftermath at the RCA Studios.

1967 In London, guitarist Jeff Beck debuts his new group featuring bassist Ron Wood, drummer Aynsley Dunbar, and Rod Stewart.

1967 A twice nightly tour kicked off in the UK at The ABC in Romford, Essex, England featuring, The Small Faces, Jeff Beck, Roy Orbison and Paul and Barry Ryan.

1968 The Grateful Dead celebrate their move from Haight-Ashbury to Marin County with a special farewell concert in San Francisco.

1969 Led Zeppelin recorded their first Radio 1 session to be aired on 'Top Gear'.

1971 The South African government lifts its ban on the Beatles' recordings.

1972 Pink Floyd begin a tour of Japan.

1973 Slade's 'Cum On Feel The Noize', entered the UK at No.1, making them the first act to achieve this since The Beatles.

1973 At the Grammy Awards, Record of the Year goes to Roberta Flack's "The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face." Album of the Year is the all-star live LP Concert for Bangladesh.

1977 The first night of a UK tour with Johnny Thunders & The Heartbreakers, Cherry Vanilla and The Police kicked off at the Roxy Club, London, England.

1980 A napkin signed by Elvis Presley fetches 500 pounds at a Sotheby's auction in London. Four dollar bills signed by the Beatles sell for 220 pounds, as does a packet of letters written by the Rolling Stones.

1984 German singer Nena started a three week run at No.1 on the UK singles chart with '99 Red Balloons'.

1985 Michael Jackson visited Madame Tussauds Waxworks in London to unveil his waxwork lookalike.

1990 Janet Jackson started a three week run at No.1 on the US singles chart with 'Escapade', her third US No.1, a No.17 hit in the UK.

1990 Lindy Layton and Beats International were at No.1 in the UK with the single 'Dub Be Good To Me'.

1994 The Smashing Pumpkins were banned from appearing on BBC TV's 'Top Of The Pops', due to the content of the songs lyrics. The bands single 'Disarm' was that weeks highest new entry.

1995 In Lausanne, Switzerland, R.E.M. drummer Bill Berry undergoes a craniotomy after it's determined he suffered a brain aneurysm onstage.

1996 Take Thats final single, 'How Deep Is Your Love', started a three week run at No.1 on the UK chart.

1999 The first date on a 14 date tour with 'N SYNC and B*Witched kicked off in Jacksonville, Florida.

2000 Former Bay City Roller, Derek Longmuir was released on bail on charges of downloading child pornographic images from the internet and keeping indecent videos in his home.

2000 Tom Jones won the best male artist at the Brit Awards. Other winners included Travis for best band, best single went to Robbie Williams for 'She's The One, Five won best pop act and Macy Gray won best newcomer.
